Chemistry Seminar with Prof Jianju Guan from McKelvey School of Engineering at 11:30am
Dr. Jianjun Guan is the Earl E. & Myrtle E. Walker Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Washington University in St. Louis, where he joined the faculty in August 2018. Prior to this appointment, he served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University, beginning in 2007.
Dr. Guan’s research focuses on biomaterials, drug delivery, and regenerative medicine, with an emphasis on developing innovative therapeutic strategies for tissue repair and regeneration. His work encompasses the design of biomimetic elastic polymers, nanostructured scaffolds, and injectable, rapidly gelling, tissue microenvironment-responsive hydrogels for controlled delivery of cells and therapeutics. He develops functional peptides, proteins, and nanotherapeutics to modulate inflammation, promote angiogenesis, reduce fibrosis, and enhance tissue regeneration. His research also involves engineering and delivering smart cells capable of sensing and responding to disease-specific microenvironments, enabling stage-adaptive therapeutic interventions that address the evolving needs of tissue repair and regeneration. He also investigates biomaterial-mediated regulation of stem cell fate and function. These approaches are applied to the treatment of myocardial infarction, limb ischemia, bone defects, and chronic wounds. Additionally, his research includes the development of biodegradable imaging probes for real-time tissue oxygen monitoring using electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging.
Dr. Guan has delivered more than 120 presentations at national and international conferences, published over 110 peer-reviewed articles, and edited one book. His publications have received extensive citations, with an h-index of 59. He holds six patents, and his research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, American Heart Association, and biomedical industry partners.
